Le Français
During French Language Arts this year, the students are going to do a lot more writing than they have in the last 3 years. We are going to read various texts and then write our own texts in the same genre. To do this we will be reading more, working a lot on conjugating verbs, building more sophisticated vocabulary, and working on summarizing an idea.
Grammar Objectives
Students will be charting their progress in French grammar this year. We will start with the following objectives:
Objective 1.1 I can introduce myself and a friend by choosing the correct verbs (avoir/être) and correct spelling.
Objective 1.2 I can compare myself with a friend while making sure the adjectives are changed according to the noun gender and using conjunctions and comparison words.
Objective 1.3 I can describe where I live using the correct prepositions and vocabulary.
Objective 1.4 I can explain my daily life before and after school using correctly conjugated verbs in present tense and the proper prepositions to describe my hobbies.
Objective 1.5 I can speak about what I want to do when I’m an adult by correctly conjugating verbs to the simple future tense.
(aller + infinitive)

French Book Resources
It can be hard to find the right type of book for your student. Here are some ideas of where to get books from so that they can really enjoy reading in French.
- Book Orders from France (L'école des loisirs)
- School Library
- Downtown SLC Library (has the biggest selection of all the public libraries in town)
- 1jour1actu.com is a great kids news site that has interesting articles and interactive activities. Reading from an article will count for 10 minutes of reading.
- Monthly Scholastic Book Orders from school
- In each book description, it will say for which grades the books are appropriate. I recommend 3 grade level for most students. Feel free to ask me if you are concerned about finding the right level for your student.
- Look below for an example of how to fill out the form. You must select the E-U (USA) price.
- Please pay with check only made out to Scholastic Canada
- If your student lost their order form, feel free to browse online here. You can print out the order form, or send me an email with your desired selection.
- We cannot order online because we don't live in Canada. :(
French Reading
Just as students are doing a 30 book challenge in English, students will also track how many books they read in French. Students will need to read books from 4 genres: fiction, fairy tales, informational, and comic books. If students read 1 book every 2 weeks throughout the year, they will be able to accomplish this challenge!
Vocabulary
Students will be learning new vocabulary every week, but their practice will take place mostly at school unless extra help is needed.
Writing Projects
We will be working on our handwriting and typing skills as we practice writing in French this year.
